Mabry Mill
Lens: DA 18-270mm Camera: K-70 Photo Location: Blue Ridge Parkway ISO: 5000 Shutter Speed: 1/160s Aperture: F9
Posted By: Dale H. Cook, 05-01-2019, 06:58 AM

Easter Sunday afternoon I decided to drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mabry Mill, the most photographed location on the Parkway. It had been so many years since I had been there that I had forgotten that morning light is best for the preferred viewing location. My initial shots looked too cold, so I added a Hoya Sepia B filter. This image was exposed to best show the detail in the mill, so the sunlit patch of grass at the right is overexposed, but I am generally pleased with the result.

After I posted the original photo I decided to reduce the gamut a bit in post, and crop it a bit, with this result. I greatly prefer it to the original, which was too garish. I use this version as wallpaper on my computers, tablet, and phone.

You may have seen it in a painting. It is the most visited and most photographed place on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and probably most painted as well. My photo has deliberately altered colors (via a Hoya Sepia B filter) to make it more artistic. In reality the mill is a dull weathered gray.
