Kaaterskill Falls
Posted By: DeadJohn, 06-07-2019, 02:31 PM

A large 2-tier waterfall in New York State, dropping a combined 260 feet. The falls are notable for being a favorite subject of "Hudson River School" painters.

The location is also notable for fatalities. There were 2 deaths in 2014. That triggered $450k in trail improvement construction. There were 2 more deaths in 2016. While I was there I saw people wearing flip-flops walking on rocky cliffs, swimmers near the top of the falls, and people sitting with both legs dangling over the cliffs.

The DEC did the trail improvements and put signs up. As long as they're not liable they don't care...

Kaaterskill simply suffers from being too close to NYC...not that the rest of Upstate is much better.

@boriscleto, DEC might "care" but there are practical limits to what they can do. Unclimbable fences would ruin the view for everyone and cost a fortune (and might break laws with respect to keeping the area natural).

Very nicely executed image and PP.

With respect to your description of how people show questionable safety in environments such as this.... no matter where I travel I see people, usually young, hanging over or off 1000’ drops or more and taking ridiculous risks. Of course, when they get hurt/killed their poor judgment still won’t stop legal issues.

That's a very nice photo of a place I too have visited. Glad they have made some trail and safety improvements.

When we visit Upstate New York's Columbia County sometimes we stay at Taconic State Park in Copake Falls.
From there it's a very short and easy hike to Bash Bish Falls, the highest single drop waterfall in Massachusetts.
However I no longer go there; I have no desire to witness the possible death of some foolish teenage diver.
