Red Admiral butterfly
Lens: Built-in lens, set to 108mm Camera: Panasonic DMC-FZ62 Photo Location: Co. Durham, UK ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/1000s Aperture: F5

A quick snap from my garden earlier today, taken with my little Panasonic DMC-FZ62 bridge camera. I've had to crop quite significantly in post, as I could only get so close to the butterfly - so the limitations of the sensor and the camera's JPEG processing are more accentuated than I'd prefer. No match for my Pentax DSLRs, but I do find this to be a very convenient and useful little camera with decent image quality for it's sensor size...

I like it. Admirals are native to our area but have not seen any. Wife and I have become butterfly advocates in the last couple of years. They're in trouble world wide and people need to step up and help if they can. If anyone has the room they should plant pollinator friendly plants that are native to their area. The Monarch is especially hurting. Milkweed is the ONLY plant a female Monarch will lay her eggs as it is the ONLY plant the Monarch caterpillar will eat. Please plant some in your garden if you have the room. Thank you.

Excellent job not only by your gear, but by you. No question, you do know what you are doing in any situation. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the nice comments and information

Some of our Red Admirals are resident, but in many cooler parts of the country - and mine is one of those - they're generally unable to last through winter. But we get a good number migrating annually from the European continent.

Monarchs are something of a rarity here, and never seen at this latitude. Even in the south, they're rare - and milkweed isn't an indigenous or commonly-cultivated plant... which might be one reason why we see so few Monarchs, even in the warmer regions...

Ah, thank you kindly, Tony. You're more confident in my abilities than I am But, I have fun, and that's what counts

Both you and your Panasonic made a great job here.

Nice capture. They are very common here this year where I live. I have not seen them very often before. Now I know their names. Thank you for posting.

Came out great! I like the "close up" scene setting the little digicams offer.

I find this photo to be much better than the one I took
work break - PentaxForums.com
Yours is better composed, being around green, but I learned quickly to take what you have because it likely won't stick around very long.
