Many shrines in Japan sell fortunes called omikuji which are written on thin strips of paper. They usually cost 100-200 yen, about $1-$2. After you read your fortune, you attach it to a place in the shrine to help carry your wishes to the gods. The omikuji are on the right. In the background, an elderly local is walking to the front of the shrine to say a prayer.

Thank you! One of the things I find fascinating about saying a prayer at a shrine in Japan is that you have to clap your hands to get the attention of the kami. I guess they are busy listening to people at lots of shrines!
