Nature Mystery Moth

This critter caught my eye as it was moving amongst the Lavender just outside my window...it moved like a hover-fly but was around 30mm long...no idea what type of moth it is.

Hummingbird (Hawk) Moth group. Supposed to be omens of good luck.

The Hummingbird Clearwing Moth does not occur in the UK. It is likely one of its cousins as listed on this page:

British Moths | Thumbnail List by Family | Sesiidae

Good catch Jack. I didn't look at the location and just assumed North America. Mia culpa. It does look a bit like a Macroglossum stellatarum that are found in mainland Europe (Germany, France, etc).

Nice live action catch. They are interesting beings that are examples of mimicry. Get more images if you can. It would be interesting to your local university entomologists if it is a M. Stellararum. You could be noted with finding one on the British Isles.

Thanks again Take-5-JB...they seem to becoming more common in the U.K. than I knew...I found this online...

"In the British Isles they can be seen somewhere every year, and have been recorded in every county as far north as the Orkney and Shetland Islands. The numbers which reach our shores can vary greatly between years. The main season runs from June to September, with smaller numbers recorded throughout the rest of the year."
