The feathers on the tibiotarsus (upper leg) are whitish, so it's a Grey Heron of Europe and Asia. Great Blue Heron of North America has rusty-coloured feathers on the tibiotarsus. The reason I know this is because both species are rarities here in eastern Newfoundland. We carefully examine the tibiotarsi of all large herons that occur here -- Grey Heron is only slightly rarer than Great Blue Heron here.
