Moon rock and other Apollo 11 bits
Lens: 17, 28, 50, 100M Camera: 6D Photo Location: Nixon museum

The Richard Nixon library and museum is hosting the Apollo 11 moon landing exhibit. I am omitting photos of photos...

Exhibit entrance.

Fire alarm in space?

Russian souvenirs. Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first person in space.

Apollo 11 patch.

Period technology.

Instamatic.

Tape recorder.

Polaroid Land camera.

Lift-off on fake TV facade.

Moon rock sample from Apollo 17.

Replica period livingroom. I had a set of those World Book encyclopedias at left.

Replica coffee table items. Smoking was big.

Telephone used by Nixon to call the astronauts.

Transcript of telephone call.

Nixon greets astronauts on the USS Hornet. They were quarantined for 21 days in a modified Airstream trailer.

Why no Star-Spangled Banner...

A disk of messages was left on the moon.

An interactive display allows you to select and read the messages.

Gift-shop ties...

A rich story telling series of shots created a lot of interest for me.

I remember watching the landing as a kid, with probably most everyone else. Funny that when I visited the Johnson Space Center outside Houston in 2015, I somehow missed the big rockets...

I imagine most people of the right age remember where they were. I was at a rustic summer / sailing camp in Michigan. Watching television in the Dining Hall was as much a treat as the subject was momentous.
