In the monkshood

A Yellow-head bumble bee foraging in the backyard monkshood patch. The European ancestor of this plant went by the name wolfsbane in ancient times. It contains many alkaloids toxic to humans but apparently not to insects.

Thanks, guys. It was a cold, wet summer and the bumble bees suffered as a result. Numbers were way down this year. Hoping for better weather next year!
