Have i overdone the PP?
Posted By: junkdon, 10-11-2008, 10:49 PM

Hi,

Am starting to experiment with PP of RAW, rather than just using JPEG's out of the camera - I like the vivid look of these two, but would appreciate advice - have I perhaps overdone the saturation and contrast here, and made them look a bit unnatural?

thanks

Don

(Both shot with K200D and DA21)

Love the first one...

The second looks a bit too punchy on my laptop...

But I think the first one very good. Post a bigger version of it if you would.

Definitely works well with the first one, it adds to the already surreal look of the subject.

The second one I agree with Gus only I would go further and say it looks like you either stopped short or went too far. Pushing it some more would look good I think and so would pulling back.

I agree with the comments already posted. The first one seems about right. The second looks a bit too punch but also I guess the subject matter is not as eye catching which may have lead to a bit too much punch in the image.

Thanks all for the helpful comments. Gary I'll try your suggestion of both less and more to see what works.

Agree that the first one is tops

There's something wrong with the shrubs and grass of the second one to me... too much yellow perhaps. Did you use Auto colour in your process... i've found that it doesn't always come out the way it's meant to. Try it again and forget the auto colour (or do it then go back and adjust the colour balance which never looks as good).

No, I just used Pentax Photo Lab, increased the contrast by 1 stop, the saturation by two, and the sharpness by two, and then played with the brightness histogram to put a slight "s" curve in it until it looked more interesting. I was really just experimenting.

That statue is something I bypass everyday on Saturday.

No, it is not over processed. Unless you are from a canon camp who are more used to pale vision through dense cataract, this kind of colour is usually desired in the old film days.

I don't think the 2nd one is that good but 1st is good indeed. It looks slightly surreal but then so does the main subject so it actually adds to it...
well done
