Tak Fever
Lens: Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 Camera: K5IIs Photo Location: North Carolina
Posted By: 7.62lew, 08-30-2019, 08:05 PM

FIrst pic (Super-Takumar 50mm 1.4 seven element lens) was taken with the Super-Takumar 50mm 1.4 8-element lens. Second pic was taken with the 7-element lens shown in the first pic..that's tricky...I think I confused myself

Some more pictures from the 7 element lens in this album. Super-Takumar 50mm 1.4 7-Element | Flickr

Will get an album going with the 8-element version in few days...

Good deal. I use a SMC Tak 50/1.4 a lot with an uncorrected M42 adapter on a F-mount camera as a "poor man's macro". By today's standards it's not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I like its rendering for a lot of things.

I will have to try it on a "gutted" 2x tc that I use for a macro tube.

Here are a few pics from the 8-element Tak 50 I picked up. Definitely a different rendering, seems to have more of a "glow" wide open. Some more pics here Super-Takumar 50mm 1.4 8-Element | Flickr

My plan is to maybe only keep one of them...how many 50's do I really need? Too early to tell which I prefer.

I dunno, think I'd keep both. I have read somewhere that the 8 element 50mm F 1.4 Takumar is regarded as one of the best 50's of any manufacturer..ever made and the 7 element isn't too far behind.

Very nice quality in the photos.

Tak fever isn't a bad thing to have, but it is incurable.

My observations line up with another user about the 8 element 50mm f1.4 in that it seems to have a bit more depth of field at any given fstop compared to the later 7 element designs.

Personally I think wide open center performance on the 50mm 8 element is just stellar given its age, with very soft corners but that doesn't matter as much in a portrait.

I've managed to buy three taks in the last three weeks (I need to cool it). The 2 50's and and a super-takumar 35mm 3.5. Its incredible how well the are made. The 35 came with both caps and original case and is version 2 which puts it from 1964-66. It looks like it was never used. It was priced where I HAD to buy it.

Heck I have a limited lens that I bought that has paint chipped on it and the taks are 50 years old with no missing paint!

They both seem to be great lenses. I am looking forward to learning to use them well.

You should consider using them on their native format as well. The spotmatic is quite a treat

2 of the lenses came attached to spotmatics. One is black version and the other is silver. They both have issues with the battery on the bottom plate. Can't get the battery caps off due to corrosion. The whole bottome plate doesnt look too difficult to remove though, if a replacment could be found. And they look new on the inside. Both had stickers inside dated 1980...maybe the last time the were serviced. Nice shots by the way!

About the battery caps, I suggest you turn the cameras upside down, and use a toothpick to drop a solvent or WD40 into the rim of the cap. Let it sit. Usually there are two small holes in the cap, and you can use these with a set of pointed dividers as leverage to unscrew. A few gentle raps on the battery cover, or an ice-cube to shrink it first may help. Patience.

I will try that and see what happens. They are just sitting anyway. Thanks!
