Huge Fire in San Francisco Bay
Posted By: Damn Brit, 10-12-2008, 11:19 PM

Angel Island is the largest island in the bay and for the last two hours it has been on fire.
It spread from two acres to ten acre in fifteen minutes due to the high winds.

It has quite a history, Japanese and German POW's were imprisoned there in WWII.
Angel Island (California) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Took these from my deck, the city lights you can see in the second shot belong to Emeryville.

First one taken with a no name 70's screwmount 200mm 3.9 and a no name 70's screwmount 2xTC both purchased with a pristine Spotmatic purchased in Okinawa in 1970.
Second shot is without the TC.
Not great shots but newsworthy.

No news yet as to the cause. Up to thirty people were camping on the island and they were evacuated. It has been Fleet Week and this weekend was the culmination. The bay was full of boats, display planes were flying over during the day, maybe a flare or something started it.

That is quite an event and very nice shot, Gary. There is some beauty even this tragedy.

Thanks for looking and commenting.
The thirty, or so, year old screwmount 200 + 2xTC combo worked pretty well, I would say the fire was a good 1 to 2 miles away.
The lens and TC worked out at about $40.

1-2 miles or 10-12? Oakland is at least 12 miles from Angel island. Just tryin' to orient myself and wrap my head around the scale.

Cool photos either way.

Looking again, I would say it's probably three miles as the crow flies but it is really hard to judge distance like that that's why I was conservative in my first estimation.
No way is it 12 miles away from Oakland, not my part of Oakland anyway. Not even by road.
Next time I drive over that way, I'll try and remember to get an odometer reading for you.

Well it sure doesn't look it Mike. But like I said, I was being conservative, I'm not good at judging distances like that. I don't know what kid of distances one could expect to reach with a combo like the one I used. Any idea?

Looks to be about 11 miles and change from Piedmont to Angel Island using the Gmaps Pedometer utility. I'm guessing you're in the Piedmont / Oakland Hills area from the angle of the shot?

I was tempted to go shoot pictures of this the other night, but was too lazy to cross town. They got it out pretty quick with helicopter and inmate assistance.

Well blow me down I can see farther than I thought. You and Mike have come to similar distances with your research. Who am I to argue.
But look at the second picture, does that look like 11 - 12 miles to you?

Nope, it sure doesn't look that far, but with those 400mm's of old glass tend to really compress "apparent" distances beyond a certain point. Amazing performance really!

Gary it's not like me to leave more than one reply, but I wanted you to know that I keep coming back to look at these shots. I've saved them now!
