Huge Fire in San Francisco Bay
Posted By: Damn Brit, 10-12-2008, 11:19 PM

Angel Island is the largest island in the bay and for the last two hours it has been on fire.
It spread from two acres to ten acre in fifteen minutes due to the high winds.

It has quite a history, Japanese and German POW's were imprisoned there in WWII.
Angel Island (California) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Took these from my deck, the city lights you can see in the second shot belong to Emeryville.

First one taken with a no name 70's screwmount 200mm 3.9 and a no name 70's screwmount 2xTC both purchased with a pristine Spotmatic purchased in Okinawa in 1970.
Second shot is without the TC.
Not great shots but newsworthy.

What a view. This is a tragedy to see any fire of this scale rampaging close to the city.

The 2nd shot really does show the extent of the fire front. Good shot!

Good job on the capture. Any chance of anything closer like say from the waters edge?

Wow Gary that second shot is really something. I was just saying to my husband yesterday that this bone dry weather and high winds are what wildfires are made of. Talked to a local volunteer firefighter and he said they had the planes all geared up and ready to go in case. I guess it is fortunate that this fire broke out on an island?

Impressive Gary, very apocalyptic looking! Looks like one of those fires in the background of a Hieronymus Bosch painting. Thanks for the link, and letting us see these.

Gary

Amazing view and photos of a giant fire...

I have not watched the news yet so this is the first I have seen of the event. Very sad, as this is a beautiful Island in the middle of the bay. I know they had been clearing the euc trees off of the island to get it back to a more natural state, but I have not been over there for a few years.

I guess I should now turn on the news...

What a view you have...

Gary,

The second shot revealed the extent of fire with the living population.

Great capture.

Thanks for looking and commenting people.
I have looked over at the island this morning and it appears to be out, if not, at least at the dowsing down stage. There is still a steady stream of smoke going out across the bay.
There are a lot of pictures on the SF Chronical website but I didn't bother to upload mine.
