Very good detailed shot. They used to get heaps of these in New Guinea, mainly small ones that would drive you mad if you had no shirt on. As I recall they don't sting at all.

Thanks Em. The ones enjoying our garden are pretty small. Maybe half the size of a honey bee or a wee bit less.

Was able to sneak up on this one in the morning while it was still chilly. It walked around a little but never flew off.

Thanks Todd. With a slight breeze blowing I ended up with a lot of out of focus shots.

Beautiful photograph, I especially like how the low and soft morning light nicely models the petals and shows a lot of detail on the bee, avoiding blown-out reflections.

Sun was playing hide and seek behind clouds that morning but did a fine job when it was out at providing some warmth and highlighting details in the image. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks PenPusher. I was surprised at the variety of insects that showed up to feed on the nectar producing flowers we planted last spring. Sweat bees have been frequent visitors.

Agapostemon, probably virescens. Male.
Still looks wet from sleeping outdoors, this is a fantastic shot. The complimentary color from the echinacae petal make everything stand out.

There are a few Agapostemon species, not all have the abdomen gold and black colors. Some species only males have that. Some are all green. They're great subjects!
