A shard of schist

A shard of schist
by RobGeraghty, on Flickr

A lot of the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island appears to be made up of metamorphic rocks like schist and gneiss, formed by the Pacific Plate being subducted under the Australian Plate. The rocks have been forced upward, tilted, folded and crushed. You can see how this rock contains shiny crystalline layers formed by extreme heat and pressure.

Thanks! The first schist I saw was just next to the Colorado river at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

That's right, blame Australia. The pic demonstrates the tiny crystalline structure that forms under metamorphosis. We have similar schists around home. They don't flake (as in you can't make decent stone tools with it).

Well it's not like I caused Australia to subduct the Pacific. It's been going on for a while. I haven't noticed schists here! I'll have to pay more attention . The schist in the Grand Canyon was almost pure mica. You could break off tiny transparent layers, but you certainly couldn't make anything useful from it.

I do think I like the second one better. The bits of lichen add immense interest.

Thanks! I like the colour of the second image. The first was all about the rock.

I'm liking the second shot a lot. Nice rock features, colors, and just the right light angle. Lichen is a fascinating organism. Thanks.

Oh, I'm fascinated by the persistence of lichens and mosses too!

That last one looks like a tilt-shift photo of a forest.
