The Crane, a medieval wonder
Lens: 16-85mm Camera: K-70 Photo Location: Gdansk, Poland.
Posted By: Janse, 10-06-2019, 01:55 AM

It was a grey and rainy day outside, indside it was almost no light. I post the result anyway.

The Crane was used to place masts on ships and to load cargo. It consists of two wooden treadmills. Four people could lift the weight of up to two tons by walking activity.

Interesting but I'm still not sure how it works. What happens if one or two of the walkers would stop during a lift would it fall?

I looked it up, medieval cranes rarely had ratchets or breaks relying on the high friction resistance of the device to prevent it building up speed. On the one above the closeness of the circular beams would prevent somebody getting on or off quickly, I presume any injuries were put down to "Act of God" and tough luck.
