Also - sorry for not asking in the first post, but how far away from the subject was your lens?
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, I have used several 1:1 macro lenses. The Pentax-M 100mm macro, Pentax-FA 50mm f:2.8 macro, Pentax-FA 100mm f:2.8 Macro, Pentax-DA 35mm f:2.8 macro and several 1:2 macro third party lenses. My current two macro lenses I use the most are the Pentax-FA 100mm 1:1 macro (SUPERB LENS!) and the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG 1:2 Macro lens. The Sigma suites me well due to it's long, minimum focusing length of 37 inches. My flexibility isn't what it used to be and this lens allows me to shoot some pretty fair macro shots without having to get as close as I would if I were using a different lens. The FA-50mm Macro was probably the sharpest lens I've ever used, but only by a slight margin over the FA-100 macro. It has a fairly short MFD of about 7.5 inches, so you've got to get up close and personal when you use it.
If it's strictly macro images you're interested in, I would HIGHLY recommend the FA-100 f:2.8 macro. Ask others and I'm pretty sure you'll get the same response from anyone who has actually used it. Great color saturation, wonderful bokeh and EXTREME sharpness!
In answer to your question, I was about 12" from the water drops when I took the image above.
