I seem to never be able to get close enough for a decent picture. Nice capture.

Excellent capture. I have only seen a pileated woodpecker once in my area and that was several years ago.

Thank you for the comments. This fellow was hard at work on a log in my yard.. he gave me quite a few decent shots. First time I have been able to catch him though...mostly I see him glide through the woods or hear him drumming on a tree.

Really good pix of this male Pileated Woodpecker. I'm not a bird expert, but I understand the male has the red moustache.

Like the bokeh...had a 3D effect. We have a few around here, they live a mile or two away at an old growth, small river, forest. They are exceptional looking birds and when I occasionally see one flying through the lower growth of the forest...they sometimes look like a prehistoric bird with their elongated body and almost Pterodactyl like head and beak,

Thanks again Guys.. I got to watch one hammer a tree the other day, they make huge squarish holes. Its incredibly to watch them working a tree if they think theres bugs in it.
