Cars with wings. Functional wings, albeit at speeds nearing 3 times the national speed limit.

This last one is a poser. Plymouth never made a convertible Superbird.

Winged wonders ! These Mopar appendages must of been the largest wings ever in existence for street cars. Not sure if the old sports racing car, the Chaparral had a larger wing.

But the Chapparal wasn't a homolgated production car.

I see that there was over 200 Charger Daytonas and Plymout Superbirds at the Talladega NASCAR event this weekend, mostly street cars, but also many surviving race cars.

The things I liked about the Chaparral was the fact that it was one of the first automatic equipped race cars...modified powerglide if I recall...and Jim Hall, courtesy Traco got lots of power out of the Chevy small block V8. Also one of the first to incorporate wings to exert down force in racing.

Even though Chevrolet...along with the rest of GM divisions back then...were ostensibly out of racing completely...due to corporate dictum. However word was, that somehow Chevrolet worked alongside Chaparral in developing new race ideas.

Who knows...as a lot air/fuel mixture has rushed down the ports since those days.

That would certainly be a sight to see.

I do recall a few runs I had in the very late part of the 1960's ...from a standstill between me, my '67 Camaro RS 327/ 4 speed Muncie and a new Daytona Charger with a weird alligator type vinyl roof and a 426 Hemi, 3 speed Torqueflite. The outcome was surprising on the surface, but...the deeper reason why...wasn't. A tale for the future.
