Gulls on Mazanita Beach.
Lens: Tamron 28-200mm Camera: K-50 Photo Location: Oregon
Posted By: Dewman, 10-15-2019, 10:11 AM

This was taken at one of my favorite places on the coast - Manzanita Beach, south of Portland. I had to chase that gull all over the beach, trying to get it to fly and add the obligatory BIF in the image. This was the best I could manage after dozens of attempts to get the gull to cooperate.

What I really like about this shot is the water over the sand in the foreground with great color reflections from the setting sun. Of course the gulls are the focus, but it would make a great beach shot without them.

Thanks for all the nice comments. This photo came about at sort of a turning point in my life. I was just beginning to have to use a cane to get around and I must have been one comical sight, with my camera and monopod around my neck, my cane in hand..... and hobbling down the beach, waving my cane, trying to get the gull to fly and do HIS part in the composition! This was the FINAL shot. I had just about given up but decided to try just ONE MORE TIME. It paid off. But oh.... if I could just could have gotten a little more sky.... and mountains on the skyline!

It's really a wonderful shot! I like the colors most, as well as the background, the sea and of course the black gull. It was worth the many tries!

Nice BIF shot. The gull is flying into the open space, right from the sun reflection - excellent work posing your model the gull. The broken-up gull reflection fills in the lower area without competing with the sharp gull image. Love all the colors. Thanks.

Thanks for your comments, Ted. It's funny how you almost knew, verbatim, was going through my mind as I was standing there, contemplating all the possibilities of the scene. And that danged gull just WOULD NOT cooperate.... until this final shot. He... and his cohorts are the real stars of the show.

Working the scene is how one makes good shots like this one. Not just a quick snapshot. A sense of satisfaction when it finally works. Well done.

If only some people realized that. They will look at some of your photos and comment how good they are, then ask if you can teach THEM how to do that.

Well, that depends. Quite often they don't like my answers. I tend to be honest.
