More Stuff from the Honeysuckle Bush
Lens: Pentax-FA 100 mm Macro Camera: K-50 Photo Location: Idaho ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/350s Aperture: F10

This is another image I shot from my motorized wheel chair this past summer. To finally get the sharpness and DOF I wanted while shooting this moving subject, I had to go up to 1,600 ISO instead of my usual 800 (for faster shutter speed), and stop down to f:10 instead of my usually preferred f:8. I had found that often times at f:8, the wasp wasn't in sharp focus from one side to the other.... a DOF of less than 1/4".... but f:10 would. I always use either a monopod or a tripod if allowable to try and squeeze every bit of sharpness out of this magnificent lens I can possibly get.

Paper Wasps make good models for a great shot.

No.... not once! Why on earth would I want to ruin that beautiful "Golden Hour" light with a harsh, blinding light?

You do know there are diffusers and CTO gels, right?
Sometimes the sun's on the wrong side or there's no way of not casting a shadow on to the subject.

Yes, torashi.... I'm aware of filters and diffusers, CTO gels and what they do. If YOU want to use a flash, by all means, do so. With the type of photography I'm interested in, I've NEVER once in my 50+ years of having a camera in my hands, have I every wanted or needed a flash UNLESS it was during a family get-together on a holiday and the "family album" photos called for it.

I just don't like the effects of flash in the type of photography I'm interested in. I've managed to create some fairly decent photographs in my lifetime without EVER having to resort to flash. If the sun is on the wrong side, I move. If that doesn't work, then I'll wait till a different time of the day. Often, I'll carry a white sheet of cardboard or a mirror to use as a reflector if I get in a situation that calls for it. I have an AWOL bag full of stuff like that that can be very handy at times.... but it doesn't contain a flash.

The eternal fight between the need for a high shutter speed and great depth of field. Especially for hand-held close-ups or telephoto shots!!!

Great shot, Dewman. I have shot a few of these but never really got as close up as this. Excellent detail.

Yep, and it's a fight that's not easy to win. Sometimes, you've got to be satisfied with something less than optimum but close enough. This was one of those times.
