Potential Energy.
Lens: Sigma 28-300mm Macro Camera: K-50 Photo Location: Idaho ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/1000s Aperture: F8

The town I live in is a major transfer station for railroad traffic in the Pacific Northwest, so there's always lots of locomotives parked on the many side tracks. I need to venture out that way more often, me thinks. Due to the terrorism threat, they keep a real close eye on anyone that's on their property.

Impressive. But what the wobbles in the lines? Is that atmospheric distortion because you shot from a long way back (which was probably necessary)?

unfortunately that is a serious obstacle in America as well as in Europe for railway and industrial photographers. i'm getting chased away by owners or guards even from abandoned places for taking photos. it's like they're afraid of anyone coming closer and having slightest interest in their property.

I love repeating patterns. You should definitely go back. Keep yourself safe, though.

Yes, the OP had to use 200mm "FF equivalence", and some track has a small amount of 'wiggle' which is 'amplified' when seen at a distance and angle like this.
My main "objection" to photos like this is the 'distortion" which invariability affects views like this.

The "distortion" you see.... the "wiggle".... is actually there. It's not distortion as such.... but some old, worn out tracks that probably should have been replaced long ago. The photo I posted earlier, the B&W looking down the tracks, shows even more "wiggle." I'm not saying there isn't a lot of distortion, it's just not responsible for the wiggly tracks you see.

The 'wiggle' is there, but distance between adjacent 'waves' is compressed; the length of the locomotives is also greatly compressed - those are actually long locomotives. Perhaps I should have used the term "lateral compression" instead of the term "distortion", but it does summarize my issues with photographing railroad equipment from this angle. Artistically it gives a good, but 'misleading', view of the scene from a railroading pov.

Great angle of view. Nice perspective of tracks, engines, and power poles. Last year I was politely asked to leave the area where I was shooting train tracks in a very rural setting. The man actually apologized but said that's the way it's been since 911.

I got chased away from a live music theater a few weeks ago because I was shooting photos out back and they thought i was "casing" the theater. Like I go around with a heist movie soundtrack playing as I shoot photos with a 1963 rangefinder film camera.

Yes, in recent years I've done all my photography from 'public' property {often shoulder of public road} since I've been told by NS cops that they won't complain as long as I follow that rule; chemical plants seem to have the strictest rules.

Thanks, Dave. A few years ago, I thought of assembling a collection of rail car graffiti. The local rail yard would be paradise for that kind of project, so I headed out. I hadn't been in the RR yard no more than 3 minutes and a black SUV pulled up, the window came down and I was told by a big man, in no uncertain terms, to vacate the property. He said it like one of the security guys at a Vegas casino when they "ask" you to leave!

I decided to forego the graffiti collection.
