DA 11-18mm with the K-1
Lens: DA* 11-18mm Camera: K-1 II Photo Location: Le Bic national park

The 11-18 offers superb results when used properly on full frame. For instance at 14mm it's fully functional and offers a nice field of view.

Good to know. How far until you see some vignetting using filters/filter holder?
And 18mm is a nice FOV, too.

I checked that photo out earlier in the review. From the center of the image the photo is usable about 2/3 towards the edges and then the IQ just falls apart. Is 18mm better for FF considering the IQ?

There seems to be more da* 11-18 on ff threads than da* 11-18 on apsc threads. Makes no sense as the lens clearly doesn't perform very well on ff?

Nice shot, IQ seems really good. Vignetting is visible though. Which aperture was used?

The in-depth review includes more examples.

I don't know, honestly. Without filters, below 14mm the lens shows black vignetting. However, it's usable at 11mm with a square crop.

True.

"Falls apart" is a strong statement. 18mm is more even, which is to be expected. Using a smaller aperture also helps, which is often advisable for landscape anyway.

I'm not responsible for that. When writing the review, I used the lens on the K-1 and K-3. But that picture was captured during a trip, where I only brought the K-1. I used the lens a lot in square crop, and it worked extremely well.

F4.5.

Sorry didn't mean to suggest you've done anything wrong! It has just struck me as odd seeing all this interest in FF performance of a apsc uwa lens. Wides are generally worse off on an larger format than normals. I guess the 15-30 is such a beast that people are interested in smaller options.

I think the image is good enough for most people shot the way you shot it! Only pixel peepers and self proclaimed critiques will always be able to say something negative!!

I did not mean to be overly negative. I just noticed that the center is outstanding and then suddenly the definition drops at the outer region. I find this lens interesting as it has quite large focal range that covers FF image circle.

Pentax/Ricoh could pay a bit more attention at the wide end of DFA lenses. 15-30 is a cookie cutter with mass overload.

No worries, it's a friendly discussion

Probably. I believe Pentax would do well to remember its compact primes ethos and propose a few wide options for full frame. Revisiting the FA* 24mm, maybe, or something wider. If Irix and Laowa can do it, so can Pentax.

You were not overly negative. I could and probably should have shot the image at F8 or F11, where it would have been better edge to edge. That image was shot in part to show that vignetting is nicely controlled on FF at 14mm.

The 15-30mm serves a purpose and serves it well. But there is no equivalent to the 15/21 Limited on full frame. I would be all over the place for an upgraded version of the 24, or the FA20-35. That lens is close to being ready for the DFA label.

I'd like to see a compact like the M20/4 with smc DA15/4 characteristics. If it's also weather sealed… wet dream!
