Here is one of my favorite shots with a ballet dancer. I love shooting dancers and I hope to create a whole series of shots with dancers in gowns. I was inspired by the NY Dance Project photos Ken Browar and Deborah Ory. If you haven't seen them, be prepared to have your breath taken away.

Lovely! Proof that skill and technique are more important than the latest and greatest high end gear.

Beautifully done!

Good luck with your series (not that you need luck).

Thanks, Mike! You know that was my biggest take away from coming out of PhotoPlus. Our Pentax gear and for the most any decent gear from the last 8-10 years still holds up. How many megapixels do we really need? I am hoping to pickup a K-1 not because I need it but because I want one. Well, maybe need it. One of my K-3 is giving me some trouble. I would gladly buy a used K-3 if that were my only option. We just need to get out there and keep on shooting and perfecting our craft.

Do you normally need to shoot handheld for dancers or is it slow enough to use a tripod and be in the right spot often enough?

I use both. I try to use a tripod as much as possible. Sometimes I just take it off and go. I guess I need to practice more with my tripod. Without a doubt it's best to use one. I'm using the flash to freeze the dancer so camera shake can kill a shot. Sometimes I will also focus, go to manual focus and shoot. This is of course assuming that the dancer will be repeating a pose in the same spot.

Yes, I concur. The more I browse the shots in these forums, and take note of the gear used, the more I realise that I probably don't really need that new lens or body. It's fun though!

Lovely shot.

This is a fine shot, I know just how difficult it is to capture this sort of imagery with minimal equipment.

I had do a shoot recently with a ballet company... no flash allowed in the venue.
