a magpie

The photo has been taken at work, through the window, between the blinds (that explain the blur).
It came directly from the camera in jpeg and has been cropped.

This is a good capture of a bird I don't believe I've ever seen before. Are they cautious? {are they hard to see if they know people are around?}

I'm not sure I would have noticed the {slight} effects from the blinds if you hadn't warned us about it; obviously it would be even better without, but it will do.

They are very cautious: it has seen me when the picture was taken and 1 second later it was gone.

Good catch under less-than-ideal conditions. So different to its Aussie cousin, which is all black and white, none of the blue tinges this one has on wing and tail.

Also, the Aussie magpie is anything but cautious - I have stood still and whistled to them on my lawn, and they come to me - to within a metre!

Anyways, good capture.

Lots of magpies in Ireland when I'm there. They are beautiful birds, but very cautious, even through the window. Nice capture.

Nice capture. In California we have a yellowed billed magpie which is very shy. In the rest of the country it is black billed. I grew up around the black billed variety and they were much less shy.

There's lots of these in UK too. They stand out because of their black and white shape. They also steal things too, shiny items end up in their nests. I don't know if anyone has found out why.
