That didn't take long! Interestingly, articles I found online refer to this aircraft as a DC3 but it was actually delivered to the RAAF as a C47.
It has flown most of its life as a civilian aircraft, so it's fair to call it a DC3.

Hehe, I'm a bit of an airplane buff (aeronautical engineer).

Thanks for the background info. The DC-3 is a truly remarkable aircraft and it's great to see some of them still flying. Several operators fly DC-3s in Canada, for example Buffalo Airways.

Fair enough!

I think they fly aircraft modified with turboprops? There's several DC3/C47 aircraft still flying in Australia. My father flew on one to Papua New Guinea back in the 70's. At Wings Over Illawarra, I heard it claimed that there was no "use by" date on the DC3 airframes. Obviously they need to be maintained, but apparently they could fly for a lot longer still. As far as I know all the aircraft still flying here are museum pieces though. The one in the photo was being used for nostalgic flights, but the company went broke.

As far as I know, it primarily depended on whom in was delivered to. The military version of the "DC3" was known as the 'C47", but they have had a remarkable life regardless of the label.

The longevity of the aircraft is amazing! It seems to be a perfect design. It's a wonder that they don't still make them - except that its longevity wouldn't be good for profits.

Great use of perspective to pull the eye into the image, and then it is stopped by the propeller blade, making the eye move elsewhere. Great composition!

Thank you! I did put quite a bit of thought into the composition of that shot.
