B52 Stratofortress

This aircraft had flown from Guam. It did two passes, then flew back to Guam! That's one heck of a range.

Thanks! One of these days I'll watch that movie! I should see it, because people often mention it.

The flight was used at the Korea War. It is a life-long aircraft.
Nice catch!

Nice shot! It has a massive wingspan and I can just imagine the fuel consumption with those eight jet engines! TFS.
Best.

Great capture!

Flying without a payload it's like a big powered glider. Once it gets up really high it's very efficient.

Ahh the BUFF...was there ever a airplane more aptly named by an acronym. We don't live too far from where one of the B 52 bases is located...Minot, North Dakota .

Lovely photo, that emphasizes the power of the beast.

Another bomber that I once saw...this one coming out of some dark storm clouds was the RAF Vulcan bomber. That was fearsome looking warbird.

These wonderful birds were flying out of Beale AFB when I was stationed there in the early 60's along with SR71's. This great shot took me back many years.

I always wondered how they managed the range with the number of engines!

Shall do!

Ah, that explains a lot. It's easier to be efficient up high, which is the same reason why commercial airliners zoom up to over 20,000 feet even on a short hop.

Thanks! I've seen them in flight a few times now, and they're always impressive. I also had a close-up look at the one in the museum in Darwin.

I never got to see a Vulcan in the air, and now the last one flying is grounded.

That would have been something to see! I guess Beale would have supplied the B52 which carried the X15.

Looks like the bomber's bay doors are open. Why would that be?

It was a mock bombing run, with this result:

Here's the inside of the B52 bomb bay.

And the nose of the B52 which was on static display.
