Thanks! Yes, they were running it up before hooking it to the first train of the day.

Great picture! I haven't seen a steam engine on a line in quite a few years now, even longer since I've ridden one. (I believe there have been a few that have been through the area semi-recently, but I didn't have the time from work to go and watch.) Though I do know a place a couple hours east that does (or at least did as of the last I am aware) run a scenic route with a steam engine. They definitely are a marvel to behold.

(I think the last I rode a real steam engine was in the late 80s or early 90s when they fixed one up and did the run from Johnstown to Altoona and back along the Horseshoe Curve. Or maybe it was Altoona to Johnstown and back... It was a long time ago.)

Steam engines are somehow more interesting than Diesels.

The last time I rode a steam engine was on the "switch-back railway" in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. Sadly, a bushfire destroyed most of their rolling stock. I don't think that they're operating anymore. There's a major rail museum in Sydney which I must visit on a day when they operate the steam engines! I remember riding the "puffing billy" train when I was a child. On Sydney's north shore where I grew up, you could see the carbon under the bridges on the train line from when they operated steam engines, although the line was electrified very early, in 1927.
