First Snow Crystals of 2019/20 Season
Camera: k3
Posted By: fwwidall, 11-12-2019, 04:14 PM

An early cold snap gave me the opportunity to try out my 'snowcatcher' setup.

For these images I mounted a noname 10X microscope objective to 155mm of extension tubes, which were then mounted on my K3. Each crystal is approx. 1mm across.

My setup is basically the same as last year's, although I have built a more stable stand out of 1x3" lumber and am planning on trying out some other lenses.

Not perfect, but I have at least the next four months to improve things

I have always wanted to try this! It's so cool - and no pun intended. Very nice work. I'm looking forward to more images.

Thanks for the kind comments.

I was just out trying to capture some more crystals but its changed over to icy sleet-like stuff so I'm done for the day. I did manage one decent capture though. This one was about 2mm across.

Thanks. I use a very expensive custom filter - the blue plastic top off a can of Maxwell House coffee

Interesting imagery... so is it true that no two snowflakes are ever the same?
