Parkes parked
by RobGeraghty, on Flickr

There was some maintenance being done, so for safety the Parkes Radio Telescope was in its parking position. This telescope featured in the movie "The Dish" and was used to receive video from Apollo 11 when the Eagle landed on the moon. The first few minutes of "one small step" came from Honeysuckle Creek near Canberra, but the rest was from Parkes which had a better signal due to the bigger dish.

I wonder what kind of bird would need a bath that big?

Sounds like good advice!

Lots of clear skies, which aren't strictly necessary for a radio telescope, but they help. All of Australia needs rain with the possible exception of Tasmania.
