Mersey Gateway (new Widnes-Runcorn bridge)
Lens: HD Pentax D-FA 15-30 mm f/2.8 Camera: Pentax K-1 Photo Location: Widnes, Merseyside UK ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/60s Aperture: F6.3
Posted By: newbiek50user, 11-17-2019, 04:27 PM

This bridge was opened about two years ago. The footpath below the bridge, on the Widnes side, was re-opened a few weeks ago. When construction started, a couple of years before that, the public footpath was closed. Since its reopening it is now possible to photograph the bridge from both sides. I have waited for this for four years or more.

Thank you for liking the shot. There are some great bridges to photograph now, aren't there?

There are some great bridges, and the engineering is getting quite creative on them. But there is something appealing about and old, rusting, latticework bridge isn't there?

You chose the perspective very well here, with the close up detail of the bridge structure, and the sweeping curve into the distance. I can see why you eagerly waited to get shots of this, it is a marvelous bridge.

Perfectly composed, perfectly exposed, perfectly processed. This ought to be hanging on some walls as a large print

You're quite right. The Silver Jubilee Bridge that the Mersey Gateway replaces is typical of some of those bridges - though less able to deal with the increased traffic flow now using the crossing. The old bridge was rusting but its refurbishment is almost complete and it will re-open soon in parallel with the new bridge. I include a recent photo I took of the older bridge.

Great picture! The perspective helps give a sense of scale that I really like.
