Orion over Dawson Falls
Posted By: aitrus3, 11-22-2019, 02:48 PM

A shot I got last night. Orion over Dawson Falls. 3x 15min shots for the foreground, 1 2.5min tracked shot for the stars. The clouds started to roll in just as Orion started to rise above the trees. Gave the stars an ethereal soft feel, but lost the nebulosity I was wanting to capture.

Thanks all. Yes, being a composition, albeit taken at the same time and location, it needed quite a bit of post work to put together. My only regrets: because adding a star tracked image causes the foreground to blur, it requires some cloning to work. I usually pay real close attention to try to not clone something obvious. There is one small spot where I missed that and I may correct it if I were to print this.
Second thing is that I was having a tough time masking out the trees and ended up losing 2 aspen from the treeline that I quite liked. I may fix that as well. And of course, if I get the 7 2.5 minute tracked shots to stack, I'll update it with that data as well.
tracked star shots that involve trees are probably the hardest shots ever to get to work.

Thanks for the tips. I think I need to make a notebook of those ideas for when I start doing more night shots.
