I can recommend one book... Photographing Scotland by Dougie Cunningham, (ISBN 978-0-9929051-7-0 for £27.95) which is absolutely full of good info.

Wow! That's a really cool shot Kerrydown. It really grabs you. I used to think that savanna only existed in Africa. Then I found out we had some here in North Carolina. No lions or giraffes though.

Perhaps Savanna wasn't the right term bit it seems to fit the bill here...

"A savanna is a mixed woodland-grassland ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. The open canopy allows sufficient light to reach the ground to support an unbroken herbaceous layer consisting primarily of grasses"

Like you, we're a bit light on the big game here too.
