Very nice the way she is isolated in the frame. But who or what is she?

I'm assuming it's supposed to be a 1920's style flapper bonnet she's wearing, but it looks more like a military helmet to me (too much time in uniform....}. The lighting is good in that it lets you see the detail while not dazzling you, and the colour gives you a wonderful colour and texture. What size was she?
