The natural beauty of an air force practice range
Lens: Samyang 24mm, Pentax DFA150-450mm Camera: K-1 Photo Location: Vliehors, Vlieland ISO: 100

The Dutch air force with planes from other NATO partners use the west side of the island of Vlieland for practice. Sometimes with live munition. Not everybody is happy with that because the whole area is also part of the most important and most valued nature reserve in the Netherlands. The public is only allowed on the range in the weekends. But apart from organized tours and the weaponry used it mostly is a quiet place. And it is rather big with large areas that are flooded with hight tide. I concentrated mostly on the landscape and not so much on the military stuff.

Cheers,

Remco

1. The North Sea on the horizon.

2. Old wood.

3. The reach of the high tide is clearly visible here.

4. Near the salt marshes on the Waddensea side.

5. The island of Texel with a tank as a bombing target.

Lovely landscapes, unfortunately that's the sort of thing that makes an ideal range.

I hope you did pay attention to the 'do not there' part of "the military stuff".

Thanks! Unfortunately you are right. But the local rangers don't have a real problem with it because it also provides for some extra protection of the area.

I did! The only thing that is prohibited is taking spend munition with you. And for my own safety and others I have absolutely no problem with that!

It does and it shouldn't. It is sad, but there is rather a lot of space between dream and reality.

Brings to mind a quote from the 1983 film Local Hero (dir. Bill Forsythe). A local minister walks along the beach with a couple of men representing a would-be buyer, points out a couple of RAF jets, and after an explosion beyond a small hill, says, "It's kind of comforting. As long as they're bombing the beach, they can't be bombing anywhere else."

Nice set of photos, by the way!

Fitting quote Nath! And also a fitting time to comment on this kind of old post of mine. I have just returned from the same area to report on a sperm whale that beached itself and died. Photo's are forthcoming... Thank you!

Thanks! The Waddensea with it's coast and island really is a wonderful playground for photographers.
