Sinking Creek Covered Bridge, Giles Co., VA

I frequently drive within a few miles of this bridge, but this was my first visit. It was a gray day, and since the bridge is in a rather narrow creek valley lighting may be a bit problematic, but I will return in the spring. This is without post aside from punching it up a little to compensate for the gray day.

Although there is a bit of sag the bridge internally appears very good. It was built in 1916 and is one of only seven covered bridges remaining in Virginia. All but one are are west of the Blue Ridge (and that one is not far east of them), and I plan to photograph all of them, although one is on private property and I may need to use my 650-1300mm lens for it.

I have base jumped from the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville West Virginia, during Bridge Day....876 feet from top to bottom, second highest bridge in the USA and worlds longest arched bridge, beautiful area to drop into. That was back in 1989 when base jumping was done with skydiving gear, Bridge Day happens at the third Saturday in October. Jumped from her 3 times so far, with landing in the river once. Cheers !!

This bridge would be good in any season, under the right conditions. Great location!

Very nice. Thanks for posting this. I live just down route 460 from this bridge and ride by it frequently on my bicycle. I love seeing it decked out for the holiday.

Reminds of the movie The Bridges of Madison County where Clint Eastwood plays a National Geographic photographer.

Nice shot. Looks like sinking bridge as well as Sinking Creek. But I believe you when you say it is structurally sound.

Can anyone tell me? Why are the bridges covered? Due to ice and snow?

The covering protects the timber-truss structural members from deterioration due to weather. Without the covering a timber-truss bridge would last about 20 years, when covered it can last 100 years or more.

Thank you. Now I understand why the bridges are build that way.

What a cool looking bridge. Nice that they decommissioned it and keep it up.
