The 100 Years of Pentax hot shoe cover arrived yesterday. I was quite surprised to see the size of the box it shipped in. The box is large enough to have shipped my K-1, the battery grip, extra battery, and a kit lens (although I got the body only when I picked up the K-1).
I suppose they wanted to ensure the safety of the hot shoe cover, eh?
The box:
Just inside the top flap, the invoice/packing slip, a nice thank you card, and a Pentax branded lens wiper (not branded with the 100 Years of Pentax logo, why?).
Peel back a layer of the wrinkled craft paper packing, and in the middle of the box was the tiny package holding the cover.
The contents of the package:
A padded envelope would have been enough.
I recall someone asking in a discussion thread here where it is made. This removes all doubt, I think:
It is very well made, from a solid chunk of metal, non ferrous, but hard. Looks a bit like titanium, but I couldn't say for sure. Quite heavy. The etched finish soils easily, and fingerprints quickly turn a color that makes me think corrosion.
There is a small "L" shaped tab riveted on, at the rear. It looks like highly polished stainless steel, a very high grade of stainless, as it also is non magnetic.
The PENTAX 100 Years Of History looks to have been created when the rest of the main piece was etched, using a mask. I suspect the finish is some sort of chemical conversion etching of the metal it is made from, forming a corrosion resistant coating consisting of the parent metal, and a combination of other compounds that create a protective outer layer.
Posing on my K5IIs.
Now residing on the K-1. Overall, I like it, an awesome accessory, showing pride in my chosen camera brand, and the longevity of it.
Merry Christmas everyone!
