Alkaloids.
Lens: Sigma 18--200 Camera: K30 Photo Location: Tasmania.

The Australian island state of Tasmania, produces about 50% of the world's legal opium.

Different varieties are grown for the production of strong pain killers such as codeine and morphine. Planted in late Spring, and ready to harvest early Summer.

Wow, never new there were legal poppy farms. You learn something new very day, now if I could just remember all that I learned I'd be a genius.

These Poppies were imported by Chinese laborers while building our railroads and are still commonly found along those old rail routes and throughout much of California.

Commercial Alkaloids are quite different form those early varieties. Many years of development has gone into this industry, so that predictable levels of the required chemical makeup, produces the desired result for different types of pain killers.

Their flowers are not as lovely either. Guess you gotta give up something for reliable potency.
