Abandoned settlements and mines.
Posted By: mkgd1, 01-09-2020, 06:54 PM

I could not find a recent thread on this subject. There are hundreds of abandoned mines, ghost towns etc. across the country and especially here in the west. Some you can drive right up to and some you need serious off road capability. I have many pictures of such places, taken with my bridge camera or phone, before I returned to the Pentax fold in December.
I will start this off with a picture I took with my new (to me) K-3 a couple of weeks ago.
It is an abandoned settlement and gas station in the Union Pass between Kingman & Bullhead city Arizona. It was homesteaded in 1897 by Jonathan Draper Richardson and his wife Victoria, on the site of an old army post. They ran this until their death in 1935 and 1940. The business was operated by their descendants until it was bypassed by the new highway 68 in the late nineteen eighties.
Post your pictures and stories here.

Back on Rt 66 between Barstow and Victorville.

North of Hodge.

Hodge.

Parts of Oro Grande are tourist restaurants and shops, though these look done.

Death Valley Junction.

I was there last month. Motel and Opera house were all closed because of the virus.

South of Death Valley on Kelbaker Road in the Mojave Preserve is Kelso. 100 yards from here is the well-maintained and manned Kelso Depot museum.

On the Rt 66 area east of Barstow.

Though Roy's Cafe is trying to make a comeback in Amboy, these establishments are not.

Air traffic control.

Unlike these Ludlow establishments, there is a working cafe and motel here.

More Rt 66 goodies...

Near Kenwood exit on the Cajon Pass.

Victorville.

Oro Grande again.

Up the road from Oro Grande was Bill Potapov's garage, which was deemed a hazard and bulldozed about 2010.

There is a touristy store/cafe 120 degrees to the right and a watered retirement community a mile or so across the "river".

Just up from Helendale. Having a fire sale?

Coming into Lenwood, west of Barstow.

Daggett is a few miles east of Barstow, on the way to Bagdad, Amboy and other remnants.

The old inspection station appeared in the Henry Fonda movie, The Grapes of Wrath, which incidentally shows a few of these remnants in previous operation.

Newberry Springs, which ironically is home of the operational Bagdad Cafe made famous in a movie of the same name.

East of Amboy.

Cadiz Summit.

I think Linda in Golden Shores is done.

Ed's Camp, also seen in the Grapes of Wrath, is east of touristy Oatman AZ.

Can not imagine being in that Bellmont jail in the summer or winter or anytime . The steel box riveted together is all about security with no concessions to comfort .

The first door is to one cell, the 2nd has 2 bunks in it and barely room for 2 guys to stand up.

What a great series of photos.

Excellent idea for a thread.

I'm a history fan, particularly regional history. Over the years I've spent a lot of time in the western Canadian prairies and states such as Northern Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, etc. It amazes me sometimes the things that have happened in this region and the commonality of experience and history...even if there is an international border.

Hope this thread thrives.
