Arkansas Bull Elk
Posted By: sajmmiller, 10-25-2008, 08:03 AM

Just thought I'd share a couple taken on a visit to the Buffalo National River area in the Arkansas Ozarks. I love to hear these guys bugle this time of year! K10D + Tamron 70-300 @ 300mm + Promaster 1.7x TC for 510mm. Not cropped.

Comments always appreciated.

Hi Scott,

Looks very good, despite the "darker" lens combination you had to deal with! I'm thinking of traveling down to Ponca very soon - possibly next Friday or the weekend. Let me know if you would like to go?

I'm just back from the Pacific NW last weekend, and posted a few images (so far) from the special "bling" lens. Sorry, you'll have to go check...

Cheers,
Marc

Great captures with the elk.

I always dream to have such shots in my port folio

Nice work Scott, like Marc said, they look great considering the combo you were using. Talk about pushing equipment to it's limits.

Hi Marc,
That "dark" lens combination was definitely a challenge! Fortunately, that particular bull elk was a very good poser, because the only way I could get acceptably sharp shots was to use the 2-second timer with mirror lock up. I'm envious of of your fast glass!

Hope you had a great trip to the Pacific NW! We left there in 1989 and I miss that area. I found your "bling" lens thread and enjoyed your photos. That lens would be very useful on Ponca elk!

I sent you an email regarding Ponca next weekend.

Got it. I'm kinda busy today, but I'll reply! I'll bring the fast glass if we do it.

I agree about the FA* 250-600/5.6 - what a nice focal length range!

Cheers,
Marc

I appreciate your comment Gary. I was definitely wishing for a faster setup, especially as the late afternoon light was fading. It was a lot of fun though.

Thanks Mike! These are transplanted Rocky Mountain elk; they're doing quite well in the Arkansas Ozarks. I still miss the western high country though.

Wish they'd transplant some of them into Shenandoah National Park (Wapati WERE once native to the Blue Ridge)... Elk Wallow would finally live up to it's name again.

Thank you Jimbo. That's the closest I've been to a bull elk. He was determined to keep his harem rounded up. I do think the elk in that area have become somewhat used to people stopping along the road to gawk.
