A day trip to Izumo Taisha

At the end of last year, I stayed a couple of nights in the city of Matsue in Japan. One reason for doing this was to visit Izumo Taisha, probably the oldest and one of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan. I took a Yakumo electric tilt train from Matsue to Izumo city, then a bus to Izumo Taisha, but on the way back I used the Ichibata light rail. I then boarded another Yakumo express back to Matsue. At Matsue, I saw one of Japan's luxury cruise trains, waiting for the guests to board. A one night trip on the Twilight Express Mizukaze (sea breeze) will set you back about $2,500.

Before my train to Izumo arrived, I saw the Sunrise Izumo sleeper train. There used to be a lot of sleeper trains in Japan, but very few survive the advent of the Shinkansen. The speed of the bullet train makes sleeper trains obsolete.

The Yakumo limited express. Here in Australia, Queenslanders were impressed when an electric tilt train was introduced in recent years. Japan introduced the series 381 electric tilt train in 1973.

This is the main hall at Izumo Taisha. The rope is believed to protect the building from evil and weighs over a tonne.

This was the first Ichibata train.

Then I had to change trains to complete the journey back to Izumo city station.

Finally, here's the Mizukaze.

Thanks Todd! My favourites are still the bullet trains, but yes, one of the things I enjoy about travelling in Japan is the variety of trains. I must edit the video together!

Yes. The longer trips cost more.

They sure do! I think that they're primarily designed for rich Japanese people who want to have a first class travel experience without flying or going on a ship (or for those who also like first class air and sea travel).
