The Ohenro Pilgrimage
Lens: HDDA 16-85 WR Camera: K3 Photo Location: Shikoku, Japan ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/80s Aperture: F4.5

Japan once had many pilgrimage routes, but few remain. One which does survive and is still popular is the 88 temple route in Shikoku, known as the Ohenro. All of these temples were believed to have been founded or restored by the Buddhist monk Kukai (744-835), who founded the Shingon sect of Buddhism. The oldest record of the pilgrimage dates from 1140, so it is at least 880 years old. Walking the 88 temple route takes at least fifty days, but these days many pilgrims use modern forms of transport. We didn't have enough time to visit all 88, but since we were driving a car, we managed to visit many in a few days.

The first temple is Ryozen-ji, a short drive from Toshima city in Naruto prefecture. Our start to visiting the Ohenro temples was rainy. The bamboo decorations on either side of the Deva gate are for New Year.

The interior of the main building had a ceiling full of lanterns, which were beautiful on a dull day.

From Ozu Castle, we drove to Meiseki-ji in Seiyo town, southern Ehime. Kukai, the monk whose journeys resulted in the OHenro, rebuilt this temple in the year 822. It is the 43rd temple of the OHenro pilgrimage.
