A Pair of Plumed Whistling Ducks
Lens: Pentax HD DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Lens Camera: Pentax KP Photo Location: Redbank, Ipswich QLD ISO: 1100 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F6.3

These guys seemed a bit dubious about my presence, but they took to the water instead of flying off, giving me the chance to get 2-3 shots off. I was intrigued by their unusual plumage, particularly the tiger stripes on their breasts.

A beautiful bird. Pity we don't have them in Gippsland!

Nice shot. The neck stretch of the one on the right seems to be a typical pose when they are looking at something. I have had flocks of 50 or so on my dams sometimes. Maybe now I have water again they will come back. They seem to be wanderers (there is a closely related Wandering Whistle Duck which is the same colour without the plumes).

Birds seem to be backlit mostly to frustrate photographers . Seriously , K2 did a great job in providing us with a well done photo of these exotic ( to me at least ) birds .

Thank you, everyone, for your interest and "Likes".

@PJ1 - glad to hear you have gotten some of the recent rains. That is one out of the way location you are in: drove past (more or less!) your area on the way to Melbourne in November last year, using the new Toowoomba bypass for the first time. Must be a good location for wildlife - provided you can avoid bush fires, and get some good rains.

.

You have that right, pichaser - the sun always seems to be on the wrong side. On darker birds, it often means the eye(s) is/are almost indiscernible from the rest of the face.
