Nature Downy Woodpecker

Male Downy Woodpecker on front birch tree. He had just flown from the suet feeder and has a bit of fat stuck to the end of its bill. Decided to leave some noise in the image rather than try to get rid of it all and lose definition. The K-3 sensor is lacking at ISO6400 compared to newer models.

I have some of these in my yard, but I haven't gotten a really good shot of one yet. On shots like yours, I'll sometimes select the background areas with my jpeg editor and intentionally blur them a little. Your K-3 and my K-5IIs are similar in high ISO noise performance I think (but could be wrong). I don't usually shoot above ISO 1600, but sometimes you can't avoid it. I have my ISO noise reduction set to 'auto' in the camera, and it seems to do a decent job.

Yes, I could have done some masking but I have learned to live with some noise.

Well executed , color, focus and lighting ,jbinpg ! Many times woodpeckers thoughtfully get a branch between my lens and it .
