Thanks, my technique was crimped a bit by the two ladies standing behind me claiming I was in their way. I was going to claim closer was better but then, I suspect people who've paid for those gigantic 150-600mm lenses and then have to carry them around don't want to hear that.
What was the essential technique here in my opinion is, get as close as the animal will allow (although in this case, using a prime lens, I had to back up a bit) , crouch to eye level. Shoot 100 or 200 ISO, shoot bursts, discard the images with motion blur if the shutter speed gets to be low but don't give up on shooting at the lowest possible ISO.
