I'm experimenting with an old flash and i'm trying to freeze birds in flight!

My firts results!!

The first one is cropped the second is not.

That's a really great start, love the action in the second one even though it's not fully in shot.
Would you mind telling us how it's done?

this is only a guess after peeking at the exif data, but considering this is done at F10, 1/160th of a second, ISO 100, with a 50mm lens, I would have to think it is either done using trap focus, or an infra red trigger for the camera. Maybe a remote push button but I don't think so.

Probably the camera is tripod mounted next to a feeder, but pointing away from the feeder so you only see the bird trying to land.

Ist done with an old flash with an eye in the front ( automatic flash in the pre ttl times) Choose a havy one, becarefull with the trigger voltage because you can burn your camera. You need a short lens because you need to be close, the closer, the shorter the flash time. Its about 1/22000 sec now. Problem the is triggering, I tried several sensors and I am building a new one at the moment.

I may be changing tot a external shutter (central shutter) because the reaction time is faster and the sync time is higher (less influence from the daylight). Because off this flash only setup the background is a problem. In this case its white linnen.

Those are extraordinary. They seem like fine illustrations from a wildlife book. They are really impressive to me and I thank you for showing them to us.
