Probably about 1&1/2 feet long. I didn't want to bother him.

That sounds very wise.

Looks like a Common Snapping Turtle.

There are two Snapping Turtles in North America, one is the Common Snapper and the other is the Alligator Snapping Turtle. I'd keep my distance from either one. They quicker than you can imagine and they mean business.

My experience with Snapping Turtles is that if you leave them alone, they just want to go about their lives peacefully. Incredible animals who have been on the planet for an incredible amount of years and are very worthwhile to man as they scavenge a lot in freshwater bodies of water.

A Loggerhead is a completely different turtle. They are Sea Turtles...ocean going.

BTW, nice pix and using a telephotos like a Sigma 170-500 was a great choice...you can get a good picture of a wild animal from quite a distance. I have a Sigma 150-500 and do the same as you.

Still a baby! probably not even a teenager yet! No ridges on his shell like when they get older. I have had them annoyed at me with a 300mm lens. At least annoyed enough to turn around and go back in the lake they had just come from.

Congratulations on getting a good quality image with your K-5IIs set at ISO 3200. I usually try to keep mine set at 1600 or less. Did you use any in-camera or PP noise reduction?

Surprisingly, very little noise in this photo. I'm not sure why. I usually try to shoot a lower ISO, but forgot to adjust before taking this photo. I was able to brighten it up a bit without applying noise reduction.

I carry a canoe paddle in my car in the spring to get these guys off the roads. That way I can help them out without losing finger. I can "shovel" them up, balance them on the paddle and carry them to water.

Nice shot of an interesting animal. Good to keep well back from. I believe they have very long necks when they reach out to "snap". We have nothing like that here. Our fresh water turtles (or tortoises) are all much smaller and rather shy.
