All Quiet on the Western Front
Posted By: xs400, 10-28-2008, 04:54 PM

Two pillboxes (reinforced observation posts) located north of San Francisco on the Pacific Ocean - built during World War II. Post processing to give them the 'old' look. Comments are welcome.

Nice pics! I like the post processing you did on these. The pictures look like they came from WWII also.

Interesting shots. I didn't know the Maginot Line extended to California.

The Maginot Line look is just what I was hoping for. I'm glad you mentioned it. BTW, the steel on the top of those pillboxes is about 2 inches thick and the window cover is about an inch thick. Looks like it would withstand quite a lot of abuse by the enemy.

Neat shots - I like the grainy look. First impression - oddly enough - was a '50's era, low budget science fiction movie. That's a compliment, BTW. I'm taken with the mood of these pictures.

Nice shots and PP Frank. I had no idea those things were around. Where exactly are they and are there more that you know of?

Gary,
These two pillboxes are located in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area at the end of the road, just past the Point Bonita Lighthouse. There are some other old military fortifications but I am not aware of any others that look like these two. As I recall, they are about 1/4 mile past the lighthouse where the road ends at the Pacific Ocean.

Well done Frank. I'd be downright afraid to add that much grain to an image. But you sure get it to work here. Just shows the perfect post processing depends on the image!

I like the second image more for some reasons. It feels like the space is more open but still ominous and the bunkers feel larger and more mysterious.
Both are good but the second one just seems a little more interesting for me.
In the first one, I feel that perhaps we are not sure what we are looking at. The second one, we are still not sure what we are looking at but I really want to quietly approach the bunker and knock on it just to hear it's hollow reply.
Love the grainy look of both.
