Hi,

Iwonder if they are related to our Willy Wagtail? Totally different colour of course!

Regards,
Gordon.

Did you superglue him to the tree? When I was last in NZ you could not get one to sit still for a second, let alone try to focus on one of them.

Well done - it looks like they do in fact sit still, for at least 1/180s that is...

Great capture! I think I caught a few glimpses of them when I was in NZ in February. Certainly not long enough to get a photo.

Nice catch indeed, Mark! He is very well camouflaged against that tree, colour-wise.

We have our gray fantail (I caught this one in July last year in the White Rocks picnic are just not far from Ipswich).

And yes, they do not do much perching and sitting still. But I noticed over a 15 minute period that he kept returning to the same twig, so I trained the camera on that, and waited.

I understand that they are indeed related. Somewhat similar behaviour too.

I have many out of focus shots of this little bird.
And, just this morning I had one flitting all about me as I was raking up leaves in our garden.

Thanks! Usually, it's too dark in the bush to get a decent shot, but I got lucky with this one.

Same genus as Willy Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), Grey Fantail (Rhipidura albiscapa) and bunch of other Australasian flycatchers.
