I had the wrong lens with me, a Sigma 30mm f/1.4. I tried to be quiet, and nonthreatening so as to not disturb the wild life. I had to get close to get the first photo. I am embarrassed to say I accidentally scared the fawn. Then, I snapped rapidly.

A few minutes later we found another fawn hiding about 50-yards away. I scared this one, too.

Nice shots, particularly the first one. I find it interesting that the young of almost all deer species have spots (which mostly fade with age). That must go back a long way in the evolutionary time line. I know with our wallabies a lot of widely separated species have the same faint hip stripe which must also go back a long way.

The bottom photo shows how they lie hiding. The top photo shows how they react when they know they have been found, and are contemplating whether the threat in front of them is sufficient to require they run. Eventually we noticed the deer in the top photo hid behind a different cemetery stone for a while until we started moving away, and then returned to the area of the original stone, so it was where its mother left it. Parking your fawn in a cemetery is like parking your car outside a football or baseball stadium and four hours later, trying to figure out where you left it.
