A few real tiny critters
Lens: 100 macro Camera: K S2 Photo Location: Canada ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: 1/160s Aperture: F16
Posted By: Heinrich Lohmann, 06-15-2020, 07:30 PM

We are still on lock-down but can go for walks in the adjoining park, the park has a couple stands of wood, not very large but home to many birds and other critters. A few days a go I went to see what was there. All the critters in this series are very small, 4 to 6mm, smaller than the average mosquito.

Excellent photographs. A good idea in the lockdown...as you have proved, we can always find something of interest to photograph, if we put our mind to it. I'm inspired. I think I will go down to the little park at the end of our street.

These are truly impressive! At an aperture of f/16 I would expect some diffraction softening, but these seem very sharp. I really must experiment with my Pentax-F 100mm Macro set beyond f/13.

Thanks for the kind comments, it rained for the last few days but after it dries up there should be a few different critters around.

Thank you kindly. This lens is not very prone to diffraction, I have used f:21 with no visible signs. The only reason that I used f:16 is the output of the native flash unit. On a dark background, that's all the light there is.

.
Quite true. Back in my younger days I used to fly fish and my knowledge of different insects and their approximate hatches was something I would follow. As they say in the fly fishing community.." match the hatch.."

Superb. While I normally prefer some light on the background, the first one really lets the feathered antennae shine. The 4th is equally impressive yet sublime in its palette.

Any idea what we're looking at in those two?

Thank you, they are all Midgets, in this case both are males, only the males have the antenna. There are too many sub species for me to ID. Here is a image with both male and female.
